After his goal scoring display in their 2-0 victory over Fiorentina yesterday, Nicolo Barella has been tipped to become captain of Inter.

The Italian international broke the deadlock at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Serie A with a curling effort from range, setting the Nerazzurri on their way to victory and top spot in the table.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Repubblica, Barella’s performance in midfield suggested that he was a long-term option to inherit the captain’s armband from incumbent Samir Handanovic.

“It was Nicolo Barella who unlocked the match with a strike that was both iron and velvet at the same time,” La Repubblica declared in their report.

“The nearly 24-year-old, and it’s hard to believe he is so young, is increasingly becoming a complete player. Granite despite his slender physique, very fast in his feet and in his head. Today he is one of the best midfielders in Europe, tomorrow he could be Inter’s captain.”

Barella joined Inter from Cagliari in 2019 on an initial season-long loan, before the move was converted into a permanent transfer last summer.

The Sardinian has scored seven goals in 71 appearances for the Nerazzurri and helped the club reach the Europa League Final last season.

Fellow midfielder Ivan Perisic completed the scoring in Florence in the second half, as Inter moved a point clear of AC Milan at the top of the table.
