Inter would have emerged as the winners of the proposed deal to sign Roma striker Edin Dzeko in exchange for Alexis Sanchez, according to agent Dario Canovi.

A bitter dispute between Dzeko and coach Paulo Fonseca in January led to the Giallorossi looking to offload their captain and negotiations were opened with Inter to send him to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in return for forward Sanchez.

However, the deal ultimately collapsed after the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement over Dzeko’s higher wages, with the Bosnia international returning to Roma and being reintegrated into the squad.

Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, Canovi claimed that Roma were making a mistake and it made no sense to move Dzeko on in exchange for Sanchez, with Inter set to enjoy the benefits if the deal had gone through.

“This transfer was pure madness from Roma and an intelligent operation for Inter,” Canovi claimed. “Fortunately for the Giallorossi the situation didn’t materialise and they made Fonseca rethink. This deal would have made no sense for Roma.”

After initially being frozen out by Fonseca, Dzeko returned to the first team squad at the Stadio Olimpico and appeared off the bench in yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Juventus in Serie A.
