Inter coach Antonio Conte deserves praise for his work to take the team to the summit of Serie A despite uncertainty behind the scenes, according to Italian journalist Matteo Marani.

A 2-0 victory over Fiorentina on Friday evening saw Inter leapfrog city rivals AC Milan to go top of the table, although the Rossoneri have a game in hand as they welcome Crotone today.

Goals from Nicolo Barella and Ivan Perisic sealed the victory and a return to the top, despite growing concerns about the financial state of the club.

Owners Suning are currently in talks to sell Inter, whilst wages owed for July and August were deferred until this month and a similar arrangement was found for November and December, with players set to be paid in May.

Despite this backdrop, Marani believes that the squad have bought into Conte’s methods and fully back him, whilst sporting director Beppe Marotta also deserves praise for his work behind the scenes.

“Inter against Fiorentina were a team in the mould of Conte,” Marani claimed when appearing on Italian television station Sky Sport 24 yesterday.

“They were compact and showed great attachment to the visions and plans of the coach. The Nerazzurri, amongst other things, have not conceded in four league matches. The management of Marotta and Conte during this emergency period has been very strong.”

Inter return to action when they face Juventus in the second leg of the Coppa Italia Semi-Final on Tuesday, as they look to overturn a 2-1 deficit.
