Inter’s season must be considered a failure if they do not win the Serie A title, at least according to the club’s former defender Francesco Colonnese.

The Nerazzurri only have the league left now after they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Juventus on Tuesday, following a goalless draw in their semi-final second leg.

Antonio Conte’s side have already been eliminated from Europe after finishing bottom of their Champions League group in December, and Colonnese is pulling no punches with his former side.

“Inter must try to resume their league campaign now and win the Scudetto,” he explained as he appeared on the Twitch channel of Italian football journalist Nicolo Schira.

“Without the Serie A title, it will be a failed season.

“They have already been eliminated from two competitions and there is now only one goal that must be achieved.”

Colonnese, who spent three years with Inter between 1997 and 2000, then went on to insist that Inter have no excuses for failing to secure a first league title since 2010.

“There are 17 games to go, but if you do not win in the head-to-head matches then you will not get anywhere,” he warned.

“If Inter get hurt against Lazio on Sunday, the Milan derby follows immediately after and they will need a positive result.

“Inter have no more excuses, they must aim to win the Scudetto.”

Inter are currently sitting in second place in the Serie A standings after 21 games played.

They trail league leaders AC Milan by two points and the match between the two sides in 10 days’ time could have a decisive impact on where the title ends up.
