Inter’s ideal summer signing plays for Roma but it isn’t Edin Dzeko, according to a leading Italian football writer.

Antonio Conte’s side were punished for a lack of cutting edge in attack on Tuesday as their goalless draw at Juventus knocked them out of the Coppa Italia.

In an interview with CalcioMercato.com, Corriere della Sera columnist Mario Sconcerti discussed Inter’s recent struggles in front of goal and highlighted which midfielder they should be looking to sign from the Giallorossi.

“Lautaro Martinez’s goals are not frequent,” Sconcerti argued.

“There is no shortage of goals – he has 10 and no second striker has scored more – but too much time passes between one goal and another for Lautaro.

“In the last 12 games he has scored five goals, but these goals have come in three games and there has been nothing in the other nine.

“Inter cannot afford for this to happen because they don’t have other strikers to help when Romelu Lukaku is missing or has a bad day.

“The only one is Achraf Hakimi, who has four goals, who is very strong.

“In a couple years time, Lautaro will regularly score 20 goals but now he has to learn how to distribute his goals, he cannot go months between goals.”

“The real imperfection of the team lies precisely in the difficulty of creating and contribution from the midfielders in attack.

“Nobody creates and only Nicolo Barella scores.

“The right man for Inter would be Jordan Veretout, a younger version of Arturo Vidal who also scores more goals.”

Veretout, who has played for Roma since joining from Fiorentina in 2019, has scored eight goals in 24 appearances this season, which is more goals than any Inter midfielder has managed.

The 27-year-old, who formerly played for Premier League club Aston Villa, is contracted to Roma until the end of the 2023-24 season and has been linked with Inter in the past, most recently last summer.

Veretout has also provided four assists for Paulo Fonseca’s side during the current campaign.
