Inter striker Romelu Lukaku is out of form and could do with a rest, an Italian newspaper report suggested today.
The Belgian national team player scored 15 goals in his first 19 games this season but has scored just five goals spread over four of his last 10 games, as pointed out by Corriere dello Sport’s print edition.
Lukaku’s drop in form, potentially down to tiredness, was said to be completely normal because ‘no professional can be at 100% for nine months’.
But the Rome-based publication said Antonio Conte knows he cannot afford to rest the 27-year-old, despite another off-colour performance against Juventus in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday, with no credible alternative to Lukaku in attack.
Inter have two huge games coming up next in Serie A, with Lazio and AC Milan both waiting at San Siro in the next 10 days.
CdS said Conte would have to hope Lukaku could power on and find some extra energy from somewhere for those matches, because the Nerazzurri’s hopes of winning the Scudetto are lying on his shoulders.
Lukaku has scored 54 goals in 78 appearances for Inter since his arrival from Manchester United in the summer of 2019.
