Marcelo Brozovic and Christian Eriksen can play together in Inter’s midfield, an Italian newspaper reported argued today.

Antonio Conte tried out a ‘double regista’ set-up in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final second leg at Juventus, with Eriksen picked alongside Brozovic for the first time this season.

Tuttosport’s print edition claimed that, while the experiment did not earn the Nerazzurri the result they wanted, with a goalless draw confirming their exit from the competition, there were encouraging signs from the pair’s cohabitation in the first half at least.

“Inter didn’t break down the Juventus wall, it’s true, but the opening 45 minutes showed for the first time this season that they can be on the pitch at the same time,” the Turin-based publication wrote.

Eriksen was said to have interpreted the ‘mezzala’ position in his own way at the Allianz Stadium, rather than in the manner Conte prefers by making forward runs into the box.

Nonetheless, TS suggested the Dane did not wander aimlessly about the pitch like he had done during previous performances in that role.

Conte prefers to have two attack-minded midfielders in his trio who can support his forwards, such as Nicolo Barella and Arturo Vidal, but it cannot be ruled out that the former Italian national team coach will try out this experiment again in the future.
