Inter only have one more improvement to make to become one of the finest teams in Europe, according to former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi.
Antonio Conte’s side moved to the top of the Serie A table on Sunday thanks to their 3-1 win over Lazio, meaning they could move four points clear of AC Milan with victory in this weekend’s Derby della Madonnina.
The Nerazzurri had a few imperfections to their play early on in the season but have since ironed many of these out, as Sacchi pointed out in a column for Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition.
“Inter are improving,” Sacchi assured.
“At the moment they are strong defensively because everyone is coming back to help, and they are exceptional when they break on the counterattack.
“In order to make the next step, Inter must improve when it comes to moving the ball around against teams who sit deep and defend.
“The ball still does not move with as much fluidity as it should, although their penalty against Lazio came after a move involving three or four passes which gives reason to be optimistic.
“If Conte manages to make this improvement then Inter will be a top side not only in Italy but also in Europe, where you must always take the initiative if you want to compete with the best teams.”
Inter are looking to land a potentially decisive blow on AC Milan’s Scudetto hopes with a win in Sunday’s derby at San Siro.
Nerazzurri legend Luis Suarez believes this weekend’s game could be decisive for the title race, whereas Sandro Mazzola is not so certain.
Christian Panucci, meanwhile, is confident Inter have the psychological upper hand heading into the big match against Stefano Pioli’s side.
