Achraf Hakimi has earned the blessing of Inter’s legendary former full-back Maicon.

Hakimi has been repeatedly compared to the Brazilian ever since he joined from Real Madrid in a €45 million deal last summer, having contributed six goals and six assists to the Nerazzurri’s cause this season.

Speaking on Inter’s official podcast Kick Off last night, Maicon played down the comparisons but admitted he had been impressed by his natural successor on the right wing.

“Hakimi is a player who can really make the difference, but it is difficult to make comparisons,” he said.

“Everyone has their own qualities, their own characteristics, but without a doubt he has already shown a lot of what he can do.

“He is acquiring more and more awareness and confidence, this is important.

“I hope he can improve and give his best to Inter.”

Maicon, who was a pivotal part in Inter’s successes during the mid to late 2000s, also looked ahead to this weekend’s Milan derby against AC Milan, which is arguably the most important of the last 10 years since he was playing.

“I would have liked to go to San Siro to experience this derby first hand,” he added.

“It will certainly be a spectacular match.

“Unfortunately COVID-19 has prevented me from attending such an important match live.

“As a fan, I think this match will be decisive for the Serie A title.”

Antonio Conte’s side currently lead the way in Serie A after 22 games played and they hold a one-point advantage over their city rivals heading into Sunday’s clash at San Siro.

Both sides have won one derby so far this season, with Inter prevailing in the most recent meeting during last month’s Coppa Italia quarter-final.
