Inter’s victory at Parma last night took them six points clear at the top of Serie A, but not everybody was in the mood to celebrate.

Antonio Conte’s side dug out a hard-fought 2-1 win at the Stadio Ennio Tardini to extend their lead over AC Milan in second.

But Il Giornale’s print edition was far from impressed with the Nerazzurri’s performance, arguing that it showed why Inter flopped in this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Instead of trying to assert their dominance over a side who have won just twice in Serie A all season, Inter allowed Parma to have the ball and let them play, knowing that sooner or later they would make a mistake and could be punished.

The report said this style of play was the explanation for why Inter got knocked out of Europe far sooner than they should have, because Conte’s approach does not work against the best opponents on the continent, such as Real Madrid.

Inter were not at their best against relegation-threatened Parma but came away with all three points thanks to a double from Alexis Sanchez.
