Former Inter centre-back Nicolas Burdisso believes that lifting the Scudetto this season could kickstart a period of dominance for the Nerazzurri over the coming years.
Argentine defender Burdisso helped Inter to four consecutive league titles from 2005 to 2009 before joining Roma, and claimed that the current squad had the potential to repeat the success enjoyed by the team he was involved in.
Speaking to Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today, Burdisso also suggested that Inter’s early exit from the Champions League at the Group Stage in December, as well as going out of the Coppa Italia last month, could play a significant role in winning the Scudetto.
“They have momentum and this year it was helpful to be knocked out of the cups, because [Antonio] Conte is a great coach at training and preparing,” Burdisso claimed.
“When he only had a few days to prepare for a match it was difficult. He has one of the best groups in Europe, though it was not nice to be eliminated from the Champions League like that because they could have competed.
“Inter now have the opportunity to begin a winning cycle and that’s a great thing.”
Now the sporting director at boyhood club Boca Juniors, Burdisso reflected on his style as a defender in comparison to current centre-backs.
“I wasn’t [Christian] Chivu, but I wasn’t uncommon either. It must be said that today there are no longer defenders who play in the style of the past. Today there is more information and greater discussion,” Burdisso concluded.
Having joined Inter from Boca Juniors in 2004, Burdisso went on to score 12 goals in 170 appearances for the Nerazzurri. After a successful spell at Roma, the Argentine saw out his career with stints at Genoa and Torino.
