Julio Cruz is delighted to see Inter back where they were when he was playing for the club more than a decade ago.

The Nerazzurri are currently nine points clear at the top of the Serie A table after 27 games played and have been widely tipped to become Serie A champions for the first time since 2009-10 by media outlets, pundits and former players alike.

Cruz discussed Antonio Conte’s side and their chances of clinching the title, as well as showering praise on Inter’s star strikers Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

“I am pleased that after so many years Inter are back in first place,” Cruz explained in an interview with Italian news outlet Il Posticipo.

“Lukaku is doing very well, he and Lautaro understand each other very well on the pitch.

“The team is right behind Conte and I am pleased.

“Inter are back to being what they are and how they were when I was there.”

Cruz, who played for Inter between 2003 and 2009, went on to sing the praises of Conte and shared his hope that Inter go all the way and win the Serie A title this season.

“His CV speaks for itself,” El Jardinero added.

“I played against Antonio, as a footballer he was very strong.

“Conte has either done well or very well with all the teams he has coached.

“He went to Inter, a team that is not his, he had the attributes to go there (despite his Juventus past) and now he is doing well.

“Now I hope he wins the Scudetto.”

During his six-year stint with the Nerazzurri, the former Argentine national team player made 197 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored 75 goals and provided 19 assists for his teammates.

Inter are not back in action until April 3 now after tomorrow’s fixture at home to Sassuolo was postponed, following a COVID-19 outbreak in Conte’s squad.
