Fiorentina defender Lucas Martinez Quarta admitted he is relishing the opportunity to test himself against the best strikers in Serie A this season, citing Inter pair Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.

The Argentine centre-back joined Fiorentina from River Plate in October and has emerged as a key figure for the Viola in his debut season season, catching the eye with a series of impressive performances.

In an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport, the 24-year-old discussed the step up in quality since arriving in Italy from domestic Argentine football, with compatriot Martinez and Belgian star Lukaku amongst his most difficult opponents.

“Lukaku left a mark on my neck, then there was [Roma’s Edin] Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez and more,” Martinez Quarta declared.

“I am very happy to have come to Italy, this experience has allowed me to test myself against the best.”

Martinez Quarta has gained praise from fellow Argentine and former Inter captain Javier Zanetti, as well as ex-Nerazzurri and Fiorentina defender Daniel Passarella.

“I wish to be like them. Even here in Fiorentina there have been many strong defenders and I hope to add myself to the history of this club. I know many Argentines have found a connection with Florence and succeeded here because it is beautiful and knows how to display love.

“I understand why so many compatriots have lived here for a long time and I hope to also enjoy a long stay here,” the defender concluded.

Martinez Quarta has scored once in 15 appearances in his debut season with Fiorentina, having netted in a 3-3 draw against Parma earlier this month.
