Inter are set to miss out on Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Netherlands international closing in on a free transfer to Barcelona.

As reported in today’s edition of British newspaper The Sunday Times, Wijnaldum will not pen an extension to his contract at Anfield, due to expire at the end of the season, and will instead link up with compatriot Ronald Koeman at Barcelona.

Inter had been tracking the former Newcastle United midfielder but had been blocked in their efforts to move for him due to ongoing uncertainty over the ownership and financial situations at the club.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will look to replace Wijnaldum with another Inter target in the form of Udinese captain Rodrigo De Paul, with coach Jurgen Klopp identifying the Argentine as his ideal option.

The Nerazzurri had looked to challenge for De Paul in January but were unable to commit to a deal, whilst the former Valencia player has also drawn interest from Juventus.
