Inter right-back Matteo Darmian has spoken out against racism in football and participated in a campaign to combat discrimination in the sport.

Darmian, on loan at the Nerazzurri from Parma, joined club Vice-President Javier Zanetti in a video presentation to Inter’s youngest age groups across their youth teams in an effort to educate the boys and girls against racism.

“It saddens me that in 2021 the problem of racism is still so topical,” the former Manchester United defender declared, as reported by FCInter1908.it.

“It is important to continue to fight it, not only with words but with concrete gestures, and raise awareness amongst the young as much as possible.”

The event was part of an anti-racism initiative on Thursday 18 March, with the day dedicated to fighting discrimination.

In addition to contributions from Darmian and Zanetti, the children also watched pre-recorded messages from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Italian Olympic Federation President Giovanni Malago.

Senegalese goalkeeper Saidou Omar Diaffe also provided an account of his experiences, having been the victim of racial abuse whilst playing for Agazzenese in 2019.

Darmian has made 25 appearances for Inter in all competitions this season, scoring twice.
