Inter could see their cohort of international players released to join up with their respective national squads this week, after initially being barred due to an outbreak of COVID-19.
With four players testing positive since last weekend’s win over Torino, the Nerazzurri saw yesterday’s Serie A match against Sassuolo postponed and the squad were ordered to isolate until the end of March by the local health authority (ASL).
However, as reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, these restrictions may be lifted over the coming week.
Inter returned no new positive tests yesterday and if they continue to do so over the weekend, the ASL may consider lifting their decree and allowing the players and staff to regroup for training.
Meanwhile, the authority would also take into consideration approval to allow players selected for international duty to meet up with their compatriots, despite coach Antonio Conte and senior staff’s reservations.
The club believe that it is easy to avoid a further outbreak of COVID-19 by keeping the group together in Milan and were left reeling at the last international break in November, when Milan Skriniar, Marcelo Brozovic, Aleksandar Kolarov and Alessandro Bastoni all contracted the virus.
Despite this, a decision is likely to take into account the risk of reputation in postponing a match, only to allow players to travel a few days later.
