Inter enjoyed a successful weekend in Serie A without even taking to the pitch, according to a report in the Italian media today.

The Nerazzurri saw Saturday’s game with Sassuolo postponed last week after four of their players (Danilo D’Ambrosio, Samir Handanovic, Stefan de Vrij and Matias Vecino) tested positive for COVID-19.

As per Corriere dello Sport’s print edition, Antonio Conte and his players will have been delighted as they sat watching on TV yesterday with Juventus incredibly losing at home to Benevento.

Inter are now 10 points clear of their arch rivals with 11 games left, although AC Milan did prevent it from being a perfect weekend by coming from behind to beat Fiorentina (closing to within six points of Conte’s side).

The Rome-based publication pointed out that Inter will be last of the leading three teams to play in the next round of games after the international break, when they visit Bologna on April 3.

Had AC Milan and Juventus both won yesterday, therefore, it would have meant Conte’s side likely taking to the pitch at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara with their two title rivals only three and four points behind respectively.

As it is, AC Milan will be on their coat tails anyway (assuming the Rossoneri beat Sampdoria at San Siro) but the situation could have been more complex for Romelu Lukaku and co.

The real crossroads of Inter’s run-in, the report argued, would be the game against Sassuolo, which is likely to be rearranged for April 7.

If Conte’s side can take nine points in eight days against Bologna, Sassuolo and Cagliari, it would take them a huge step closer to winning the Scudetto.
