Nicolas Burdisso has revealed he went through a ‘trauma’ after leaving Inter to join Roma in 2009.

The defender spent six seasons playing for the Nerazzurri after joining from Boca Juniors, scoring eight goals in 139 appearances across all competitions.

Burdisso missed out on Inter’s historic treble-winning season when he moved to the capital the summer before – but he was already wondering whether he should regret his transfer even before Jose Mourinho’s side went and made history.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday, the former centre-back recalled: “Inter were a team I wanted strongly.

“After Boca Juniors I had various options on the table, but when Massimo Moratti called I had no doubts.

“When I left Inter to join Roma I experienced a sort of trauma: ‘how could I have played against my friends with whom I’d shared so many battles?’

“That was the question I was asking myself, which was disturbing me.

“Ultimately, our professionalism has to come before everything.”

Burdisso won four consecutive Serie A titles with Inter between 2005 and 2009, along with three Supercoppa Italiana titles and two Coppa Italia trophies.

He spent five years at Roma until moving on to finish his career with stints at Genoa and Torino.

During his interview with the Milan-based paper, the 39-year-old also offered his thoughts on Inter’s long-term prospects under Antonio Conte and the Nerazzurri’s ‘perfect’ defensive trio of Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni.
