Milan Skriniar is beginning an era of dominance in Slovakian football that will last for years to come, according to former national team coach Vladimir Weiss.
The defender discovered yesterday that he had won Slovak Footballer of the Year for the second year running, an award handed out by the Slovakian FA in conjunction with news outlet Pravda.
Skriniar admitted he was a little surprised at having won the prize again, but Weiss expected nothing less as he sung the praises of the Inter centre-back.
“Milan is a great player who deserves the prize, although I’d hoped Juraj Kucka would win it,” former Slovakia boss Weiss (not to be confused with former Manchester City and Pescara midfielder Vladimir Weiss) told sport.sk, via FcInterNews.it.
“Milan is still young but it looks like he’ll reign for a long time, like Marek Hamsik and Martin Skrtel did before.
“Just like we’ve experienced the Hamsik and Skrtel eras, now it’s the era of Skriniar, Martin Dubravka and (Napoli midfielder) Stanislav Lobokta.”
A report in Italy revealed today that Skriniar was in Transfermarkt’s top 10 for players whose transfer values had risen the most this season, now worth €55 million after starting the campaign at €50 million.
The 26-year-old seemed set to join Tottenham Hotspur last summer, after falling behind Diego Godin in Antonio Conte’s pecking order, but now he is back to his very best.
Skriniar is an irreplaceable part of Inter’s back three now as the Nerazzurri sit six points clear at the top of Serie A (with a game in hand on AC Milan).
