Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez might be ‘demolishing’ Serie A but they are not Inter’s greatest strike partnership yet, according to former boss Andrea Stramaccioni.
Both strikers were on target once again for the Nerazzurri last night as they beat Sassuolo to go 11 points clear at the top of the league.
When it comes to placing Lukaku and Lautaro in the pantheon of great Inter forwards, though, Stramaccioni thinks there are still others ahead of them for now.
“Diego Milito and Samuel Eto’o is the best partnership,” Inter’s former head coach told Gazzetta dello Sport today.
“I say that not so much because of their numbers, because lots of other pairings have had extraordinary stats for Inter, but because they won the UEFA Champions League and the treble.
“They deserve to be first on the list because they helped Inter write a unique page of footballing history.”
Lukaku and Lautaro have scored a combined 36 goals in Serie A for Inter this season, helping Antonio Conte’s side rack up 10 straight wins since the end of January.
If they want to reach Milito and Eto’o’s level of greatness, however, Stramaccioni wants to see them make a breakthrough in Europe as well.
“They are a mix of strength and speed, both have an eye for goal and they have a telepathic understanding,” he added.
“Lukaku and Lautaro have demolished Serie A and taken Inter to within an inch of the Scudetto; now they must prove they can make an impact and be decisive in the Champions League.”
Inter suffered a disappointing group stage exit in the Champions League before Christmas, although their former midfielder Esteban Cambiasso believes that might have been a blessing in disguise for their league title bid.
