Inter’s Matteo Darmian: “No Celebrating Serie A Title Yet, Antonio Conte Keeping Us Focused”

Matteo Darmian has warned his Inter teammates not to get carried away after last night’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo.

The Nerazzurri are in an incredibly strong position now to win their first league title since 2010, with victory at San Siro taking them 11 points clear at the top of Serie A.

Despite Inter’s healthy lead over AC Milan, Darmian has encouraged everyone in the dressing room to keep their feet firmly on the ground.

“It helps us a lot to win these hard-fought games,” the defender told DAZN after the full-time whistle.

“We have an important lead but we don’t have the Scudetto in the bag yet, we need to make it mathematically certain.

“We’ll keep going onto the pitch to win as many games as possible, we cannot celebrate until it’s ours.”

Inter have now won 10 games on the bounce in Serie A but Antonio Conte is determined to keep his players focused right until the end of the season.

“Conte demands the maximum from everyone and doesn’t want us to sit back and relax,” Darmian revealed.

“We must continue like this, he’s a really hard taskmaster in training.

“We’re demonstrating how hungry we are to reach our objective with our performances.”

Darmian impressed in an unusual left-sided centre-back role against Sassuolo, having been called upon by Conte to replace the suspended Alessandro Bastoni.

The 31-year-old is not a stranger to playing in that position though, as he explained: “I’d already played in a back three under Conte with the Italian national team.

“I made myself available for the team and tried to do my best.

“It went well and we managed to bring home a hugely important win.

“The important thing is to have everyone showing confidence in me, this helps you to perform at your best.

“Everyone has the right level of desire and determination and we’re happy about that, the group spirit is one of our secrets here.”

Inter will return to Serie A action on Sunday when they welcome struggling Cagliari to San Siro.
