Inter’s Serie A title charge has received the backing of their former midfielder Andy van der Meyde.

The ex-Netherlands international made 54 appearances during a two-year spell with the Nerazzurri between 2003 and 2005, before leaving to join Everton in the Premier League.

Van der Meyde’s most famous moment in an Inter shirt came during a 3-0 win at Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League.

The 41-year-old remains deeply attached to his goal at Highbury, telling Corriere dello Sport on Thursday: “If you say ‘Inter’ to me, my mind goes to that game.

“That goal against Arsenal was unforgettable, the high point of my time at Inter.

“I’m still following Inter and I hope they win the Scudetto.”

Van der Meyde was asked to pick his strongest teammate from his stint at San Siro and chose a fan favourite who didn’t quite deliver on his full potential.

“It was Adriano, at that time he was one of the best players in the world,” he replied.

“What a left foot he had: I remember training sessions where he’d say ‘guys, I’m putting the ball there’, and he’d do just that.

“He was absolutely phenomenal, a bit like Marco Materazzi in defence.

“I still speak to Materazzi sometimes; I nutmegged him once and he didn’t take it well.”

Van der Meyde also revealed a special anecdote about former owner and president Massimo Moratti, who once used a financial incentive to try and motivate Inter’s players for a derby game against AC Milan.

“Moratti said that if we won he’d give us €50,000 each as a reward,” the midfielder recalled.

“Unfortunately we lost, but he was like a father for us.”

Inter’s current side are 11 points clear at the top of Serie A with just nine games left.
