Antonio Conte is well aware he will need a more expansive style of football in Europe next season, according to former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi.

Inter’s head coach has divided opinion in the media following Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo, in which the Nerazzurri recorded just 30% possession (their lowest in a Serie A game since at least 2004).

Sacchi is one of Italy’s most famous advocates of attacking football and outlined the challenge that awaited Conte ahead of Inter’s return to the UEFA Champions League.

“Antonio is doing a great job in many aspects,” Sacchi wrote in a column for Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday.

“But as far as the future is concerned, he knows that on the international stage it will be indispensable for Inter to take the initiative more, dominate games and press more.

“This will have to be his next challenge.”

Inter are 11 points clear of second-placed AC Milan at the top of Serie A with just nine games left.

Conte’s side have become the first Inter team to win 10 league matches in a row since 2007, when Roberto Mancini took the Nerazzurri on an astonishing 17-game run.

Inter could equal the club’s all-time record for consecutive home wins in Serie A (12) by beating Cagliari at San Siro on Sunday.
