Nicola Berti has invited Inter’s critics in no uncertain terms to back off.

The Nerazzurri are odds-on favourites to end their 11-year wait for a league title, holding an 11-point lead at the top of the table with just eight games left.

Antonio Conte’s side are somehow receiving criticism for their supposedly negative style of play, but Berti is having none of it and made his feelings very clear today.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter’s former midfielder said: “Inter are dominating games and are 11 points clear in Serie A.

“Anyone criticising them is an idiot.

“Let’s be serious here, I love this team.

“It’s understandable that they’re a little tired; we’re in mid-April, it’s nearly the end of the season…”

If Inter do go on to secure the Scudetto next month, their next challenge will be to translate their domestic dominance into the UEFA Champions League.

Asked what the Nerazzurri needed in order to become competitive in Europe, Berti added: “Inter already have a very strong team.

“If they could sign two or three players, perhaps youngsters, they would become even better.

“Let’s hope to make progress in the Champions League because it’s fair to expect more after three consecutive eliminations at the group stage.”

Conte has transformed Inter’s fortunes since his appointment as head coach in 2019 and Berti sees no reason for him to leave anytime soon.

“There are all the conditions for Inter to begin a winning cycle with Conte,” he concluded.

Inter are back in action on Sunday when they visit Napoli.
