Inter are a class above the rest in Serie A this season, according to Nerazzurri legend Maicon.

Antonio Conte’s side are 11 points clear at the top of the table with just eight games left, making them heavy favourites to win the Scudetto for the first time since 2010.

Maicon was part of the Inter team that last won the league and he seemed reasonably optimistic on Wednesday that the club’s drought was about to end.

“My experience as a player would lead me to tell you that the title race is over,” the Brazilian said in an interview with Il Veronese (via FcInterNews.it).

“It looks like Inter already have it in the bag, but there are some great teams and anything could still happen.

“Inter need to keep conducting themselves well, but I see the team play and they’re showing that they’re superior to the rest.”

Maicon made 248 appearances during a six-year spell at Inter, helping the Nerazzurri win four league titles and the UEFA Champions League among other major honours.

The 39-year-old, who recently signed for Serie D outfit Sona, was asked to pick a favourite goal and a favourite match from his time at the club, and he didn’t choose the obvious option when it came to the latter.

“Everyone says my best goal was the one I scored against Juventus 2010, not least because of how difficult it was,” Maicon recalled.

“The one I scored from long range against AC Milan (in 2012) was a brilliant goal too.

“In terms of my favourite game, if you leave aside the Champions League final in 2010 there are lots of games which struck a chord with me at Inter.

“One that perhaps nobody remembers is our other match against Bayern, when we won 3-2 in the Champions League (the last 16 second leg in 2011).

“Everyone said we would be knocked out because we’d lost the first leg (1-0 at San Siro).

“It was very difficult to come back, especially when Bayern went 2-1 up in Munich.

“It was a massive result, it went badly for us in the next round (against Schalke) but that match has always stuck with me.”
