Inter want an ‘Italian core’ in their squad to help them become one of Europe’s best again, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said the Nerazzurri were targeting summer deals for Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi (who is on loan at Paris Saint-Germain) and Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri.

Antonio Conte knows both players well from his stints with Italy and Chelsea, but Beppe Marotta is equally keen on Florenzi and Emerson as he wants Inter to create a core of Italians.

Marotta has always intended to pack Inter’s squad with homegrown talent ever since he joined in 2018, having achieved great success with this same strategy while at Juventus during their period of dominance.

Inter already have several Italians in Conte’s squad, the Milan-based paper highlighted, with the most notable being Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni.

Danilo D’Ambrosio and Roberto Gagliardini are also involved with Italy’s national team, while Matteo Darmian is proving himself to be a crucial player for Conte this season.

Andrea Ranocchia and Andrea Pinamonti are another two players currently in Inter’s squad, although neither is guaranteed to remain at the club for the 2021-22 campaign.

Conte also has Stefano Sensi to call upon, with the midfielder slowly finding his feet again after another campaign which has been ravaged by injury problems.
