Inter’s former boss Claudio Ranieri is delighted to see ‘crazy’ plans for a new European Super League collapse.

The Nerazzurri are one of nine clubs to have confirmed their withdrawal from the Super League in the last 24 hours, but the fallout is set to continue for weeks and probably months to come.

Serie A clubs were outraged upon hearing Inter, AC Milan and Juventus’ plans on Sunday and it seems many will be calling for punishment now, despite the project’s collapse.

“The Super League was a betrayal of one of sport’s fundamental principles, meritocracy,” Sampdoria coach Ranieri told Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“Preventing Leicester from taking part in the Champions League after we won the Premier League in 2016 would have been an extraordinary injustice, as well as an insult to sporting values.

“The beauty of football lies in the fact that the poorer team can always beat the richer one.

“The truth is that these clubs have gigantic financial problems and wanted to use the Super League fill the gaps in their accounts.

“My thought on the matter is: if you’ve managed 100 lire badly, what will you do when you have a million in your pocket?”

Ranieri also had a message for Inter, AC Milan and Juventus after their attempt to breakaway and take part in the new franchise.

“I’ll focus on Juventus in particular, because Inter and AC Milan have overseas owners,” he explained.

“Juventus built their history in Italy and have 11 million fans and they can’t turn their back on all this.”

Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have all joined Inter in pulling out of the Super League, while Juventus have also effectively conceded defeat.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only two clubs yet to confirm their intentions.
