Alessandro Bastoni is set to double his wages at Inter with a new three-year contract at the club, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said Inter had prioritised agreeing new deals for Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez, which will be finalised upon Steven Zhang’s return to Milan.

Bastoni is currently tied to Inter until 2023 with an annual salary worth €1.5 million, but he is now in line for a ‘short but substantial’ extension.

The defender will sign a deal through to 2024 with his wages increased to €4 million, bonuses included.

Inter’s talks with Bastoni’s agent Tulio Tinti were ‘delicate’ because of the club’s financial problems, the Milan-based paper explained.

Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio were unable to guarantee Bastoni the €5 million salary request made by Tinti, because it would have increased their wage bill too much.

Instead, the parties have reached a compromise which will see Bastoni get €4 million but with only a one-year extension, perhaps opening the door for further negotiations in 2022 when COVID-19 has hopefully disappeared.

Inter are hoping the new deal will dissuade Bastoni’s suitors from making a move in the summer.
