Inter confirmed today that they had withdrawn from Europe’s new Super League.

The Nerazzurri were one of 12 leading European clubs to announce their involvement in the franchise on Sunday night, along with Serie A rivals AC Milan and Juventus among others.

However, everything fell apart in rapid fashion last night as the six Premier League clubs – Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool – withdrew under huge pressure from fans. politicians, pundits and players.

“FC Internazionale Milano confirm that the club is no longer part of the Super League project.,” the club announced in a statement today.

“We are always committed to giving fans the best football experience; innovation and inclusion are part of our DNA since our foundation.

“Our engagement with all stakeholders to improve the football industry will never change.

“Inter believes that football, like every sector of activity, must have an interest in constantly improving its competitions, to keep on exciting fans of all ages around the world, within a framework of financial sustainability.

“With this vision we look forward to carry on working together with institutions and all stakeholders for the future of the sport we all love.”

According to Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition, it is not a coincidence that Inter were the first Italian club to withdraw from the ESL, because it was AC Milan and Juventus who were the most ‘involved’ in the new project.

In order to avoid a repeat of the Super League fiasco, FIGC president Gabriele Gravina is expected to push through laws on Monday which oblige all teams participating in Serie A to make a commitment to UEFA competitions.
