Samir Handanovic damaged his chances of staying at Inter with another blunder at Spezia last night, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Inter’s goalkeeper and captain made a costly mistake early in the first half when he failed to stop an innocuous shot from Diego Farias, allowing the hosts to open the scoring.

Ivan Perisic equalised before half-time but the Nerazzurri were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw, leading to a fresh wave of criticism for Handanovic after a period of improved form.

Tuttosport’s print edition argued Handanovic was less likely to sign a new contract at the club after such a display, which came only three days after he scored an own goal in Sunday’s draw at Napoli.

The Slovenian remains an important figure at Inter both on and off the pitch and is hoping to extend his contract through to the end of 2023.

Inter are considering giving the 36-year-old an extension but it would only be natural that they revisited their plans if Handanovic continued to offer poor performances.
