Inter must begin the search for Samir Handanovic’s replacement after he made another blunder in last night’s 1-1 draw at Spezia, a report in the Italian media argued today.

Handanovic was unable to stop a harmless effort from Diego Farias and allowed Spezia to open the scoring early on at the Stadio Alberto Picco.

FcInterNews.it said the goalkeeper’s mistake was ‘criminal’ because Inter could not afford to gift a goal to Vincenzo Italiano’s side, who had already caused serious problems for AC Milan (who they beat), Juventus and Atalanta this season.

While Handanovic’s leadership as Inter captain cannot be questioned, the report argued it was time to start planning for the moment when the Slovenian will pass on the goalkeeping baton to a younger successor.

Handanovic had enjoyed a two-month period of great form but he is now reverting to being the error-prone keeper Inter had at the start of the season, when a series of costly mistakes had put his future at the club in serious doubt.

The 36-year-old delivered six points for the Nerazzurri during February’s derby win over AC Milan and the 1-0 win against Napoli back in December, but his great saves are being compensated by a string of ‘unforgivable errors.

Handanovic was also culpable in the 1-1 draw at Napoli on Sunday, scoring a comical own goal after fumbling Lorenzo Insigne’s cross.

Inter have conceded two goals from one shot on target in their last two games, which does not paint their goalkeeper in a great light.
