Inter and AC Milan are expected to choose Populous as their architectural team to build the new San Siro, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Tuttosport’s print edition noted that Populous’ proposed new stadium, The Cathedral, had been used as a backdrop behind Inter’s logo on the European Super League’s new website.

This is thought to be ‘a public admission’ that they are favourites to get the nod over US-Italian consortium Manica/Sportium, the other leading contender to captain the San Siro project.

Populous unveiled their stadium design back in October 2019, describing The Cathedral as ‘a new icon for the city of Milan’ and assuring it would create ‘an unforgettable atmosphere’ for fans.

Manica/Sportium remain hopeful of recovering ground on Populous in the clubs’ preferences, the Turin-based paper added, despite what appears to be a very clear hint dropped during the botched Super League launch.

They still have time to stage a ‘comeback’ because Milan’s city council has refused to make progress with the stadium project for several months, due in part to the upcoming elections (which have been postponed until October).
