Inter coach Antonio Conte praised his players after they secured a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona in Serie A today, noting the significance of ending Juventus’ nine-year Scudetto-winning streak.

Victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, courtesy of a second half Matteo Darmian goal, sees Inter reach 79 points and go 13 clear of AC Milan, having played a game more.

With just five matches remaining and only requiring six more points to be guaranteed the title, Conte recognised the achievement of his team in ending a winning run he started with Juventus in 2012.

The biggest regret is what we are doing this journey without the fans. I think that reaching 79 points with five games to go is something extraordinary, important and exceptional,” the coach declared in his post-match press conference, as reported by FCInterNews.it.

“We are overthrowing a kingdom, the throne of a single team for nine years and when this happens we must honour those that fall but also those who take their place.”

After earning a first win in three matches, Conte argued that victories at this stage of the season are worth more than at any other time, particularly as teams behind drop points.

“Three points now weigh more. Each victory is worth six points for us, but this one is worth nine. This victory eases the pressure on the team.

“With five matches left we are in a strong position, with a good gap on those behind. A very small step is missing, it’s small but still missing and we want to try to get there as soon as possible.

“It would mean enjoying the end of the season by playing those who worked hard and deserved to play more for what they showed. Everyone has put everything aside for us, there is a desire to finish in style and give great joy to the club and the fans.”

The coach admitted that the physical demands of a long season were starting to catch up with his players, whilst also pointing to the mental pressure of trying to become the first Inter team to win the Scudetto since 2010.

“Let’s not forget that we have reached a congested part of the season, the team have played three games in seven days.

“I have chosen the best possible team because we are physically fine and it can be hard to find a certain balance. Verona are a physical team that have challenged us in that regard, but also from a mental point of view.

“For many, this is the first time they are challenging for something extraordinary and there is pressure. The team are facing up to it very well though and I’m happy about it,” he concluded.
