Antonio Conte deserves all the credit in the world for Inter’s likely Serie A title triumph, according to one former Nerazzurri defender.

Inter need just five points from their final five games to secure the club’s first scudetto since 2010, following yesterday’s 1-0 win at home to Hellas Verona.

Conte’s detractors have suggested that Inter should be top anyway because they have the league’s best squad, while others have criticised their style of play in recent weeks.

Beppe Bergomi is full of admiration for the job Conte has done though, telling Sky Sport Italia last night: “I know what it’s like at Inter, Conte’s work has been crucial.

“The team spirit that’s emerging now is there for everyone to see, you can see it from how everyone celebrates together.

“You might tell me it’s easier to do that now that Inter are close to the finish line, but I think this is the result of a process which began two years ago (when Conte was appointed head coach in 2019).”

Inter could be crowned Serie A champions as early as Sunday, if they beat Crotone at the Stadio Ezio Scida on Saturday and other results go their way.

The Nerazzurri have now won 13 consecutive home league games for the first time since the 2010-11 season and are now only three points away from matching their final points total from last season (82).
