Inter’s likely Serie A title success will be extra impressive given the Nerazzurri’s off-field problems this season, according to a leading Italian journalist.

Antonio Conte’s side need four points from their final five games to win the club’s first scudetto since 2010, following Sunday’s 1-0 win at home to Hellas Verona.

Inter have withstood a barrage of speculation concerning owners Suning since the start of 2021, who have been seeking new investment at the club while deferring a series of player salary payments.

“Suning’s sudden crisis has made Inter’s season more difficult,” Paolo Condo wrote in a column for Monday’s print edition of La Repubblica.

“It’s clear that Conte and Inter’s directors have had to deal with a potentially explosive situation.

“If we haven’t heard a single complaint out of the dressing room during this period – although there might have been complaints on the inside – the credit should go to them.

“Beppe Marotta has been the best manager in Italian football for some time.”

Matteo Darmian scored the crucial late winner at San Siro on Sunday and, according to Condo, the scenes of jubilation that followed showed that Inter’s players just knew how important yesterday’s win was.

“We’re used to seeing Conte celebrate with his players on the pitch, but there was something definitive about it this time,” Condo added.

“Inter have ended the longest run of dominance in Serie A history, the nine titles won in a row by Juventus.

“You only need to think about the enormity of the club they are dethroning to get a sense of this achievement.”

Inter could be officially crowned as champions on Sunday, if they beat Crotone at the Stadio Ezio Scida (on Saturday) and Atalanta don’t beat Sassuolo (on Sunday).
