Inter have laid the foundations to make big improvements in the UEFA Champions League next season, according to their former boss Marcello Lippi.

The Nerazzurri need only four points from their final five games to win the club’s first scudetto since 2010, following Sunday’s 1-0 win at home to Hellas Verona.

Antonio Conte’s next big task will be to make progress in Europe, after Inter were surprisingly knocked out at the group stage for the third Champions League campaign running before Christmas.

“In the space of two years, Conte has built a team in his image at Inter,” Lippi, who had one season at Inter and coached Conte for several years at Juventus, told Adnkronos (via FcInter1908.it) on Monday.

“I’m convinced he’ll do well on the European stage next season as well.

“Winning the scudetto is the sign of a new start at Inter.”

Inter could be officially crowned as champions on Sunday, if they beat Crotone at the Stadio Ezio Scida (on Saturday) and Atalanta don’t beat Sassuolo (on Sunday).

Matteo Darmian was the Nerazzurri’s hero again on Sunday, scoring another late winner off the bench to break Hellas Verona’s resistance with 13 minutes left.
