Inter president Steven Zhang has caught everyone by surprise and returned to Milan ahead of schedule today, according to a report in the Italian media.

Gazzetta.it said Zhang brought forward his return to Italy by one day and has already landed after taking a flight in a private jet.

Zhang will not have to undergo a quarantine period after obtaining an exemption for work-based reasons and should return to Appiano Gentile tomorrow, where he will be reunited with Inter’s players and coaching staff.

The report said his early return was a sign of just how many issues Zhang needed to work on, with Inter facing an uncertain future in all sorts of areas.

Inter are in talks with Oaktree and Bain Capital over a possible loan deal worth €250-300 million and this is likely to be the first task on Zhang’s agenda.

He will also proceed with negotiations to agree contract extensions with Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni.

Zhang is still not expected to travel with Inter for Saturday’s Serie A match away at Crotone, not least because the Nerazzurri cannot officially be confirmed as champions at the Stadio Ezio Scida.

Antonio Conte’s side must wait until at least Sunday before they can celebrate, because Atalanta will need to slip up away at Sassuolo to complete the job this weekend.
