Steven Zhang is eager to rebuild Inter’s squad in his own youthful image, a report in the Italian media explained today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said the Nerazzurri had an urgent need to reduce costs in the summer transfer window, which likely meant lowering their wage bill and offloading some older back-up players.

Inter want more youthful options behind their first-choice starting XI as they seek to secure the club’s long-term economic stability.

Zhang is an embodiment of this policy, with the report pointing out that the 29-year-old would be Inter’s youngest president of the post-war era to win the Serie A title.

Inter’s president returned to Appiano Gentile this morning and the Milan-based paper said he was planning to give a motivational speech of sorts to his players.

Zhang wanted to thank the team for continuing to produce results despite enormous off-field difficulties, while also firing them up for their title run-in.

He met Inter’s chief executives Beppe Marotta and Alessandro Antonello yesterday and is said to be prioritising Inter’s on-pitch matters, before turning his attention to their financial situation.

Zhang is likely to use ‘reassuring words’ for everyone at Inter when he begins explaining what lies ahead for the club, according to this report.
