Inter could win the Serie A title without being on the pitch for the second time in their history this weekend, depending on other results.
Antonio Conte’s side are on the verge of a first Scudetto since 2010 and should they defeat Crotone today, will be crowned champions tomorrow in the event that Atalanta fail to beat Sassuolo.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport, Inter were also able to enjoy a title success from the comfort of watching on television in 2009, under Jose Mourinho.
In that instance, they were crowned champions before even taking to the pitch, courtesy of AC Milan’s 2-1 defeat to Udinese 24 hours before Inter took on Siena.
Captain Javier Zanetti and the squad joined President Massimo Moratti at the Appiano Gentile training ground to watch Milan’s match, whilst fans gathered outside to celebrate the moment in which Inter were crowned champions. The Nerazzurri then went on to defeat Siena 3-0 the following day.
Conte, meanwhile, also has history of becoming a Serie A title winner without being involved in a match, with the third and final Scudetto of his successive league titles with Juventus coming as Catania defeated second-place Roma in 2014.
