Inter coach Antonio Conte has been criticised for his determination to sign midfielder Arturo Vidal, whilst giving him more chances than Christian Eriksen, by Italian journalist Stefano De Grandis.

Chile international Vidal was signed from Barcelona last summer at the behest of Conte, after the coach had worked with him previously at Juventus, but has underwhelmed in his first season at the club.

Meanwhile, Eriksen struggled for opportunities in the first half of the campaign but has become a key figure since the turn of the year, whilst injuries and poor form have seen Vidal out of the team.

Appearing as a guest on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia yesterday, De Grandis praised Conte for leading Inter to the verge of the Scudetto, but argued that his handling of Vidal and Eriksen were his only errors.

“Conte has many merits but in the season in which he will win the Scudetto, he also made some small mistakes,” De Grandis claimed.

“In my opinion he made a mistake at the beginning for example, when he didn’t give Eriksen the same chances as he gave Vidal.

“He gave the Chilean a lot of chances before changing. I think it was the wrong signing by Conte. The coach has had great season with eight good things and two less good,” De Grandis added.

Vidal had scored once in 23 Serie A appearances for Inter this season, whilst Eriksen’s equal number of outings have yielded two goals.
