Massimo Moratti is confident Inter can build on their Serie A title triumph and has backed Suning to lead the Nerazzurri to more success.
Inter were confirmed as champions yesterday for the first time since 2010, after Atalanta were held to a 1-1 draw away at Sassuolo.
Antonio Conte’s side have blown all before them in Italy this season and Moratti seems convinced this could only be the beginning for the Nerazzurri.
“Inter could open a winning cycle, that’s the hope,” Inter’s former owner and president told Tuttosport in an interview for today’s print edition.
“You need a bit of fortune as well (to do that), but we have the right coach to do well and the team has all the qualities to keep going, although it could be adjusted in a few places.
“The directors did a very good job of protecting the team (from off-field speculation regarding Suning).”
Inter face an uncertain future with owners Suning yet to clarify their long-term plans for the club, but Moratti is hoping they can stay in charge despite their economic difficulties.
“They’ve managed to win Serie A fairly quickly,” he argued.
“If they were to resolve their problems, which I don’t know about but they confirmed that they had, they have all the quality and ability to do very well.
“I’m not going to go back to Inter myself, these guys don’t need anyone’s help.”
Moratti also singled out four Inter players for their contributions this season, albeit he identified Conte as the most important person in their scudetto triumph.
“Romelu Lukaku was certainly decisive, but everyone did well,” Moratti added.
“Nicolo Barella was great in midfield and so were the defenders, but Romelu is the most representative player, the one who allowed the team to live more calmly thanks to the goals he scored.
“Christian Eriksen was decisive but he also provided that touch of class and completed the team.
“He gave security and made Inter’s play more simple and relaxed, making every situation less complex.
“Ivan Perisic meanwhile is a player of great experience who has managed to resolve Inter’s problem on the left wing, guaranteeing the goals and assists necessary to pick up points in certain games.”
