Stefan de Vrij has encouraged Inter fans to relish the club’s Serie A title triumph after years in the doldrums.
The Nerazzurri were confirmed as champions on Sunday for the first time since 2010, after they beat Crotone and Atalanta were held to a draw at Sassuolo.
Inter put on a special event tonight to celebrate the scudetto with their players, who broke open the champagne with Antonio Conte and Steven Zhang during training earlier.
De Vrij told Inter TV: “It’s a beautiful feeling to win this first scudetto, not just for us but also for the fans who’ve suffered so much in recent years.
“I didn’t watch the match between Atalanta and Sassuolo, I discovered the result from our WhatsApp group.”
De Vrij’s fellow defender Alessandro Bastoni joined the Dutch international while he was giving his interview and picked out a key moment in Inter’s season.
“The big moments were beating Juventus and then AC Milan in the derby,” Bastoni argued.
“We knocked the champions off their perch when we faced Juventus, while the derby was our best win of the season.”
De Vrij responded by saying: “The win against Atalanta was a nice victory as well.”
Inter will now round out their 2020-21 season with four final fixtures against Sampdoria (on Saturday), Roma, Juventus and Udinese.
De Vrij and Bastoni could well be rested during the Nerazzurri’s run-in, with Conte expected to rotate his side now the title is secured.
