Inter wing-back Ashley Young has revealed he was disappointed when former club Manchester United decided to sell striker Romelu Lukaku to the Nerazzurri.
Young has reunited with Lukaku at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza but was at the Premier League club when Lukaku was offloaded in August 2019, before he himself moved to Serie A the following January.
In an interview with British television broadcaster Sky Sports, Young spoke of his pleasure at seeing Lukaku enjoy a successful spell with Inter after coming in for criticism over his physicality and impact in England.
“I said it at the time, I couldn’t understand the decision (to sell Lukaku). Whether it was made quickly or not, Romelu has proved a lot of people wrong,” the former Watford winger claimed.
“He’s worked unbelievably hard. There was talk that he was overweight and couldn’t do this or that. He’s smashed records and made history in Italy, he’s been unbelievable for the club.
“For me he was fantastic even in the Premier League, to go out there and face another challenge, I think it was the right choice for him. He deserves all the plaudits he is getting,” Young concluded.
Lukaku has scored 61 goals in 92 appearances for Inter across two seasons at the club and has netted 21 times in Serie A this term, as the Nerazzurri won the Serie A title for the first time since 2010.
England international Young, meanwhile, has represented Inter on 57 occasions and scored four goals.
