Inter midfielder Roberto Gagliardini pointed to victories over rivals AC Milan and Juventus as key moments in the club’s journey to the Scudetto this season.
The Nerazzurri were crowned champions for the first time since 2010 and celebrated their success with a resounding 5-1 victory over Sampdoria today, with Gagliardini scoring the opener and registering an assist.
In an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the final whistle at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the midfielder reflected on the most significant moments in Inter’s Scudetto triumph and felt a string of victories had given them belief.
“There are several games that made us think we could win. I am thinking of Sassuolo, Juve, the victory in the derby against Milan. Games that have given us confidence in our ability and taken it away from the others. We have approached every match in the right way,” Gagliardini claimed.
“There is great enthusiasm and happiness for something that will remain in history. The same team had been winning for years (Juventus), we are happy to have stopped this domination.
“The real party, however, is with the fans, they are the ones who give you the energy to win these trophies. Everyone enjoyed it. We are good guys who know how to appreciate these unique moments.”
Despite Inter winning the title, Gagliardini admitted that he could have contributed more and was hoping to improve next season.
“I’m generally satisfied, I could have done more but choices were made, especially in the second half of the season. We still won a title in a difficult situation. I will enjoy this moment and use this year to improve.
“I could have done something more with the club, that’s why I blame myself. I’ll try to work on it and improve for next year.”
The Italian international was full of praise for coach Antonio Conte and felt that he was set apart from other tacticians that he had previously worked with.
“I think the coach is unique. He has something more, he doesn’t give up even an inch even when everything around him could make him give up. It’s small details that make his strength and make him one of the best in the world.”
Finally, Gagliardini insisted that there were no issues surrounding reports that owners Suning were looking to the players to take wage cuts.
“We still have to talk about it in the dressing room, we’ll do it soon. But I think there won’t be any problem in finding an agreement,” he concluded.
