Cagliari defender Diego Godin revealed that he was pleased to see Inter win the Scudetto this season, having represented the Nerazzurri last season.
The Uruguay international joined Inter in 2019 after a hugely successful spell with Atletico Madrid, but failed to find form and was released last summer, allowing him to move to Sardinia on a free transfer.
In an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia following Cagliari’s 3-1 win over Benevento in Serie A today, Godin reflecting on the title success of his former club.
“I am happy for my former teammates and for the many people who work in the club, I know how hard they worked to win this title,” the 35-year-old declared.
Godin also suggested that much of the groundwork for the Scudetto was laid last season, as Inter finished second and reached the Europa League Final.
“Last year we did a great job for the development of Inter, and today have a fantastic squad with great players. I think the Scudetto is well deserved. We had a great season last year, we were a point behind Juventus and in the Final of the Europa League.
“This is a result of last season. I complimented my former teammates, they deserved this. Staying up with Cagliari would be my own Scudetto,” he added.
Godin scored twice in 36 appearances for Inter in his sole season at the club across all competitions. The former Nacional defender, who has represented Uruguay 139 times, has featured in 26 Serie A matches as Cagliari battle against the drop.
