Inter are set to face a difficult summer in which they must offload players to bring the wage bill down, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Owners Suning have been seeking investment to battle debts and spiralling financial concerns, despite Inter winning the Scudetto this season.

Appearing on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia earlier today, Di Marzio claimed that bringing the wage bill down will be a top priority for Suning, whilst attempts to convince players to take a pay cut may prove difficult for the club.

The journalist also suggested that Inter could be forced to sacrifice some key names and bring younger and cheaper players in over the summer in order to balance the books.

“There will be a reduction in salaries and it remains to be seen if some of the big players will be sacrificed in order to reinvest in young players,” Di Marzio claimed.

“There is the issue of salary cuts. A complicated discussion will be made with every single player. Some are about to expire and they must be renewed.

“Beyond the wages, Inter must reduce costs by 15%. For example, if [Arturo] Vidal and [Alexis] Sanchez leave, costs are brought down as they have very high salaries. When they were signed they spread their wages by increasing the lengths of their contracts. It is not easy to sell these types of players.”

Di Marzio also revealed that coach Antonio Conte would demand complete clarity from the club and that any reduction in operations would require the club adjusting their targets for the coming season accordingly.

“Certainly, Antonio has always wanted transparent and clear communication externally. If he and his team accept this plan, the club will have to tell the outside world that the goal will not be to win the Scudetto or reach the Quarter-Finals of Champions League.

“They must be objective compared to the sacrifice that is being asked of everyone. I believe that Conte will demand this if he remains committed to the Nerazzurri cause,” Di Marzio concluded.
