Inter captain Samir Handanovic is set to retain his position as first-choice goalkeeper next season as the club are unlikely to be able to afford a replacement.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Nerazzurri have recognised the need to sign a long-term replacement for the 36-year-old, particularly after a season in which he has failed to convince.

The Slovenia international was at fault for Sampdoria’s goal in a 5-1 victory in Serie A yesterday as he parried a shot into the path of Keita Balde to finish, prompting calls for a replacement.

However, any hopes of signing a goalkeeper to immediately replace Handanovic are tempered by the financial uncertainty at Inter, with the club unable to commit considerable funds this summer.

Inter have confirmed to Handanovic that he will be their starting goalkeeper as they defend their Serie A crown next season, but it is felt that this is out of necessity rather than choice.

Handanovic joined Inter from Udinese in 2012 and has made 387 appearances for the club.
