Romelu Lukaku never organised any birthday celebrations despite rumours to the contrary, according to a report in the Italian media today.
As per Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition, Lukaku had a dinner in a Milan hotel on Wednesday night with Inter teammates Achraf Hakimi, Ashley Young and Ivan Perisic, which dragged on longer than necessary.
The Belgian turned 28 yesterday and some had claimed he organised a birthday party after Inter’s win against Roma, but it was only a dinner and it wasn’t even Lukaku who arranged it.
Hakimi was said to have arranged the event instead, which eventually led to Lukaku and the other restaurant guests being sanctioned by police for breaching curfew rules.
According to the Milan-based paper, Lukaku arrived at the hotel after stopping off at home and joined the dinner with another guest, at which point he received a birthday present.
The present created a misunderstanding which led many to assume it was his party, but that was never the case.
Lukaku was first to be sanctioned by police when he went to his parked car after the dinner, after which police went into the venue and sanctioned everyone else.
Inter have defined the incident ‘an oversight’ and will not punish their players for what happened, meaning all four are available for tomorrow’s Derby d’Italia at Juventus.
