Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has warned that the Nerazzurri and many other Italian clubs must bring outgoings down in order to become more sustainable.
In an interview with Italian television channel Rai 3 to be broadcast this afternoon, but previewed in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere dello Sport, Marotta offered his thoughts on the financial struggles of his own club and others around Italian and world football.
Despite winning the Scudetto this season, Inter have faced financial woes and President Steven Zhang has requested his players take a wage cut or deferral to ease the burdens.
“I believe that the first goal is to reduce costs, such as that for labour, and therefore the salaries of the players have a big impact,” the former Juventus director claimed.
“Alternatively, we must then make the most of our resources.”
Italian teams have struggled to make an impact in European competition for some time, with Inter the last team from Serie A to win the Champions League, in 2010. Marotta felt that it was evidence of a wide gap between the standard of Italian teams and their counterparts from England, Spain, and Germany.
“I believe that the gap, not only with Inter, but all the Italian teams, is still quite evident,” he added.
