Former Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has suggested that referee Gianpaolo Calvarese was incorrect to award the Bianconeri a late penalty in their 3-2 win over Inter today.

A controversial encounter was settled late on as Ivan Perisic was adjudged to have clipped Bianconeri full-back Juan Cuadrado in the box, giving Juventus their second spot kick and the winner at the Allianz Stadium. Inter were also awarded a first half penalty, with Romelu Lukaku giving them the lead.

Appearing on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia to discuss the match, Del Piero argued that the Juventus player had actually committed the foul and that Calvarese needed to justify his decision.

“Perisic doesn’t do anything, I see him standing still. The referees should come here to explain what they saw,” former Italy international Del Piero claimed.

“Cuadrado pretends, but it’s there, it’s Cuadrado’s leg that goes towards him(Perisic), the foot goes between his legs. It’s not a penalty, but maybe we’re from another era of football, as none of the three decisions were penalties.”

After Lukaku had fired Inter ahead from the spot, Juventus struck back when Cristiano Ronaldo tucked home a rebound from his own missed penalty.

Cuadrado then put Juventus ahead in first half stoppage time, before Inter looked to have salvaged a draw through Giorgio Chiellini’s late own goal. Just moments later though, Cuadrado secured a penalty and converted it himself to seal the victory.
